Poema – March 2024, Week 2

Dear Grace,

“Two are better than one…” That’s the phrase that keeps reverberating through my mind as I think about life and ministry. There’s a well-known African proverb that says, “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” The Preacher in Ecclesiastes would agree, and add something. Cooperation and collaboration, not competition, is the means by which we can see the good in our labors.

In talking with several people both after the service and during the week, I wish I had implemented a little more of that in the application of the sermon. I specifically applied the Word to the loneliness epidemic that plagues so many men, but had I had the space and time in the crafting the sermon, I would have engaged some trusted women for their perspective. Two are better than one would have made the sermon more approachable for everyone.

While I spoke specifically about men, several conversations have helped me understand the unique challenges that women face in having real friendships. One of the most significant insights was regarding mothers. Mothers are always placing other’s needs before their own, thus the real need for friendship is often left on the back burner. One of those, “I’d really like it, but it’s a luxury I can’t afford.” There’s a level of busy-ness and time constraints that also affect women in unique ways.

Whether I specifically mentioned your lot/season of life, I hope and pray that as you listen to God’s Word, you would ask the Spirit to show you how to obey that which God speaks. Don’t do life alone. It’s hard enough as it is. Ask for, pray for, seek for friendships who will walk with you. Two are better than one.

We’re almost upon Holy Week. If you’re new to Grace, you may not be aware of our Holy Week morning gatherings. Starting Monday, 3/25, and repeating every day that week, we gather at 7:30-8:00A for a short devotion to get our hearts in the right place leading up to Good Friday. I cherish this week because the whole church family comes out. Kids come in PJs, students, young adults, folks on their way to work, senior saints who hang out a little bit afterwards. We have a simple breakfast each day, and it’s a great time to come together and visit with one another, all in the context of meditating on Jesus’ journey to his hour. Come for as many of the days as you can!

Today, let’s pray for a number of families who are grieving. Nancy lost her dad just recently. This just a few weeks removed from the passing of her mother-in-law. We are grieving with you. We are also grieving with Nnenna, whose mom passed away last month. Ms. Martina had a deep faith, and we look forward to remembering her life and impact next Saturday at Grace.

We’re also praying for several families whose young adult children are going through very difficult times. We pray the light of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ would shine on these young men and women. We pray for endurance for the parents and encouragement.

This Sunday, Pastor Seth continues our study in Ecclesiastes, looking at the ever relevant topic of wealth in the midst of a temporary and elusive life. I hope you’ll join us and invite someone who needs to hear the truth of God’s Word.
