Encouragement for Parents // April 9

April 9, 2020

In November of 2018, Christian author Eugene Peterson passed away, and his family and friends gathered at his funeral to remember his legacy. At the service, his son Leif, shared about what kind of father he was and the influence he had on him as his son. Leif Peterson said that for 50 years, the driving message of his father’s parenting was this:

“God loves you.
God is on your side.
He is coming after you.
He is relentless.”

When I read these remarkable words, I had two thoughts. First, what a beautiful message we get to share with our kids. Though the mode of parenting may change, the message never does. This relentless love of God, as seen most clearly in the person and work of Christ, is coming for you and me. Second, I wonder what my kids are going to say about my parenting at my funeral? This thought motivates me.

Parents, during this break, let’s strive together to tell and show the gospel to our kids, over and over again.

Grace to you all,

Dave
