Deuteronomy 6 is a wonderful passage that encourages parents to teach the next generation the most important command of all, to “love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.” In the following verse, notice how there are some practical tips on how exactly to do that. Here are some thoughts on these verses:
- In verse 6, notice that the first step to transferring the gospel to the next generation is believing, trusting, and living out the gospel personally. The first step is for YOU personally, to keep the Lord’s commands “on your heart.” In these new routines, don’t neglect your own soul. Cultivate gratefulness for the gospel each and every day.
- Once we do that, notice in the next few verses that we teach our kids through talking with them. Furthermore, there are examples of when to do that…when you sit, when you walk, when you lie down and when you rise. I’m guessing every family is doing more of each of these things lately. Take advantage of the additional time spent together.
- This is not a comprehensive list, and I believe is meant to read as more of an encouragement to continually be talking to your children about Lord.
It may be a new bedtime routine, a dinner time conversation, a discussion while walking around your neighborhood… whatever it is, let us apply Deuteronomy 6 together to purposefully use this time to tell the next generation about the love of God found in Christ Jesus.
Grace to you all,
