A Letter for Election Day

To all the exiles at Grace Community Church,

Today begins a nervous period of vote-counting and pundit-projecting that might feel uncertain and chaotic. This election is coming during one of the most divisive and polarizing times in our modern-day history, and as a nation, we have certainly been through a lot. The issues and worries that weigh on each of our shoulders are valid and real. But remember, while this election is important, it is not ultimate.

I wanted to take a moment to encourage and remind you of what we’ve been learning in 1 Peter over the past several weeks. Election results and presidents will come and go, but the Word of the Lord will stand forever.

For “All flesh is like grass

and all its glory like the flower of grass.

The grass withers, and the flower falls,

but the word of the Lord remains forever.”

1 Peter 1:24-25

Remember who you are – individually as a child of God, but also to one another – brothers & sisters in Christ.

When this season is done, may the world see a community of believers that chose same-minded unity, tender-heartedness, compassion, brotherly love, and humility towards one another. The Gospel is the most important belief we hold, higher than any ideology or political persuasion/conviction.

Remember what you possess. As a child of God, you possess the Spirit of God, the resources of heaven. We have an inheritance!

Remember that we are called to submit to earthly authorities, not out of an allegiance or loyalty to the person or candidate, but because we know our Father is ultimately in control.

Remember that no matter who wins the election, our hope is not in the next president. Our hope is in Jesus and Him alone.

Let’s consider: How will we respond to the results – whether it’s on Tuesday night or next week? Will we show the world and those around us that our hope is dependent on an earthly election? Or will we live our lives in a way that shows our hope is in something far, far greater?

I am praying for us this week, church. That we would be a God-honoring, light-bearing church that chooses love over whatever this world might try to throw at us. Let’s Love God & Do Good in both word and deed.

Your pastor + brother,

Mitchel
