For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.

I’ve never been one to buy an athlete’s jersey, but I had been following a particular player for a long time. He had a strong work ethic and championships to his name. I liked what he seemed to stand for, the way he carried himself, and his humility. Two days after my purchase, the story broke: Lies. Adultery. He was not who he seemed. I felt ashamed to wear that jersey–in fact, I never did. I gave it away, vowing never to purchase or wear the jersey of any player for fear of being let down, disappointed, or ashamed.

Years ago, after I made the decision to follow Christ, a coworker noticed changes in my behavior. He wanted to know why I was different. I shared that I believed Jesus is Lord and Savior and that He was raised from death to life (“For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit.” 1 Peter 3:18). I was not ashamed to tell him about Jesus and how I was a new creation, and the coworker said, “I want that.” Confidently, I was able to share the Gospel with him, and he prayed and received the free gift of eternal life.

When Paul writes that he is “not ashamed of the Gospel,” he means that he takes great pleasure in the Gospel and counts it a high honor to proclaim it. He is unashamed of the Gospel. By his words and actions, he wore a “Jesus jersey” for all to see. He was proclaiming the power of God and the glory of his salvation.

At its core, the Abounding campaign is about reaching people who are unchurched, who need the life-giving story of the Gospel and the opportunity to respond to it for themselves. By going North, we are helping others experience the grace of God and the life-change that comes with it.

Everyone deserves to hear the love story that is the Gospel and to meet Jesus. God is redeeming His people through Jesus Christ. For us to abound in every good work is to proclaim the Gospel story and let everyone around us encounter the life- changing grace of God. Will you wear the “Jesus jersey,” knowing that He is perfect in every way, will not let us down, disappoint us, or cause us to feel ashamed? Will you be confident and share with others out of the overflow of your heart?

  • How has what Christ has done given you the confidence to share His story with others?
  • Write down 1-2 people you want to share the gospel with and see accept Christ.

God, will you open doors for me to share the Gospel with those I come in close contact with, and will you grant me the courage to boldly walk through them? Pray by name for the one or two people you would like the opportunity to share the Gospel with.
